Regarding what it was used for, I talked to my friend who's family owns the farm, he said it was from a tank he had 6yrs ago - which had coral - and he never treated for disease.

Regarding the pesticides, the woods was a big chunk of woods in the middle of a bunch of crop fields. Not positive on the use of pesticides, however it's very possible. It's not exactly downhill from the fields so it's not going to get a lot of runoff, I was just concerned of the possibility... Hmmm.... Now I'm wondering if I should use it or not.

Mind you, bleach is a pesticide too. Look on a jug of Clorox...there's an EPA registration number...BC i think you'll be fine, just bleach and rinse the crap out of it!!

Now that I think about it what about all the pesticides that is in the well water (or even city water) that some people use in their tanks?? Maybe I will be able to bleach these and use them...

Heck, what about the pesticides on the non-organic broccoli that I feed my blue hippo? (which btw I switched to organic)

Most hobbiests use r.o./d.i. water for this and many other reasons. I personally wouldn't use the rock.

Heh, I emailed Roger (before I realized he wasn't well and before I made this post) and he said to bleach it and it's all good.

I'm still thinking about going for it... and at the same time I'm thinking maybe not..

Interesting. Did you mention possible exposure to pesticides when you e-mailed him?

I don't remember if I mentioned pesticides for sure, however I did say it was in the woods at a farm. For the most part farms aren't organic, so I guess I just assumed, that the possible exposure to pesticides is to be expected.

Back to my well/tap water thing, even people that don't use ro/di don't report deaths due to pesticides do they? Or do they? I thought it was more of an algae issue cause of the phosphate..

I was kind of curious about your question and from the info I gathered < And if I assume correctly> it is the waters in soil that are contaminated and if it dry's out it does still leave a residue etc- ... BUT it can be washed away....a piece of land for size and rate in which water would flood and rinse is very low flow... taking years to decontaminate a piece of property...If it enters a fish, for example it embeds in tissue and usually stays for life.
I agree with ermano and the others by saying rinse - rinse - rinse - Bleaching will kill any other contaminants but rinse - rinse - rinse....
maybe you could have your rock in a buck and stick a running hose in it for a day?
not major flow but enough to run water out of the bucket...?
I also think it would be fine...
I have picked up stuff for my fresh water an bleached - boiled and rinsed really well - let it sit in the sun in water then out of water... takes some time but I didn't see any ill effect - other than the what the rock COULD leach for mineral in my tank - That isn't you case though...
Good luck - they are nice pieces!
