I really like the shallow sps reef idea, I've been looking at a lot of great shallow tanks and thought it would be something cool and different to try out

I made my overflow out of glass, then covered with black acrylic that I had a plastic shop laser cut the teeth into. Mine is 60" long.

Well got the stand finished this weekend and the tank drilled so getting close to getting it wet! Here is a shot so far, need a couple more coats of clear on it but pretty happy with my work if I do say so myself! Debating on whether I paint the top trim white to match the stand, or peel the trim off - it's euro braced so you would see that, looking for some opinions.

I went ahead and painted the top white, trying to decide if I like it or not

I like it. Should look even better with the bottom painted :)

Ok gang, minor setback - was setting the tank on its side to silicone in the overflow this afternoon and somewhat shattered the back glass panel....

    ImageUploadedByTapatalk1360889351.078010.jpg

I think at stared at it in disbelief for over an hour. Obviously a pretty big game changer, so here are my options

    1. Toss it, order a new tank and start over
    2. Rip out the entire back and put a new piece of glass in
    3. Take the thousands of dollars I'm going to throw away into this watery hole anyways and have a party

Right now I'm halfway in between one and two - I was originally planning on building my own tank but after running the cost analysis, it was cheaper to buy it. Getting a new piece of glass would probably be around $50 plus a tube of silicone and some cable ties for spacers - we all know how much a new tank would be (unless anyone has a used tank with a 48x24 footprint on here!!??)

Question is, does anyone have any experience with replacing a glass panel? The tank structure is extremely sound, euro braced top and bottom so it should really not be overly difficult to replace. I realize lots of people have concerns over constructing entire tanks where I think this is not as complicated of a job.

    Thoughts?

Ouch. I'd just take it down to a glass shop and have them toss a new pane on just so you know it's done right.
