I have a 150 gal tank with about 175-200 lbs of rock. The system is 2 years old. Lots of coral, hard and soft, a small clam and lots of fish. I want to remove the bio balls, the filter drawer and pad and the grate the balls sit on and that long nasty blue sponge. I was going to re-plumb the pipes so they go straight down where the balls and grate used to be. Should I run the new pipes into micron socks? Should I put a couple of pieces of rock? Should I do nothing? How can I prevent splashing and noise?

Thanks for any help that I can get.
    David

Welcome to 3reef! Are you having nitrate issues? Do you just want to do something different? I personally have removed bio-balls, and added l/r.

    Hey all,

I want to get rid of the balls and sponge to get my nitrates lower without having to constantly clean that sponge out. I did clean the bio balls, about 1/3 of them a few weeks ago but I would like to start getting some corals that hate any nitrates at all. Seems like the balls and especially the sponge keep lots of nitrate in them. I don't really have a big nitrate problem because I try to keep that sponge clean.
    Thanks,
    David

Hey David, this is just my opinion, the myth of the BB being a No3 factory is just that, a myth. Theres no difference between BB and LR. They both will collect detritus(sp) and would need to be cleaned off the same. I've had 20ppm of No3 for as long as I can remember and that has been with and without BB's. Luna
