    In the wrong hands it's true they do more harm than good. Like most things in an aquarium it takes proper care to operate it well.

    They have the potential to do either harm or good, depending on your maintenance habits. Depending on the design of the W/D, where the sump will be located, and your personal motivation, it might become a pain to work with the W/D.
