I ran my last system without any sponges at all. Don't think I'm going to on my nano either.

We took out 2 of our 3 sponges in our Wet-Dry. We left the sponge in the overflow, but everything else is gone. Unless you are willing to clean all those sponges super regularly, they do more harm than good by trapping all sorts of icky poo and letting it decompose and raise your nitrates.

We eventually took out our bioballs as well and used that area to make a refugium. Our water quality seems to be better after getting rid of the nitrate factories.

There is a proper way to use sponges and bioballs without effecting nitrates or water quality, we just weren't good at it :p So we went with a filtration method that requires no maintenance. Plants! :D
