    For clarity,

    Bio-balls submersed fully?

    or

    Moist but not submersed?

I've always been told NEVER submerse your balls or they're not doing their job. To keep them out but trickle water over them to keep them moist.

Moist but open to the air... The whole point of BIO-BALLS is that they are surrounded in O2 for the air, not only boosting their efficiency but also preventing them from taxing the O2 in your tank.....

Maybe allow only the bottom inch off the balls get wet....

    Happy reefing!

I took a 20 long and filled it with bio-ball just because I had the extra balls... I drilled 2- 1" holes in the tank and put bulkheads on them. The berlin bag snaggs the heavy stuff and then it gets trickled over a tray with holes to keep them moist. Only about the bottom inch gets wet now but I was going to raise it up with egg crate. I went to my buddy's store and he has his under water, saying they had to stay wet. I was like uhhhhh... I thought the idea was to aerate but keep moist for beneficial bacteria to grow. The only bio stuff I sink is my live rock and he was saying that bioballs were the same idea but more surface area... so it had me thinking. Thank you for your reply.
