I've commented before about my lack of enthusiasm for my Coralife 125 Super Skimmer.

I often wished I bought the next one up for about $75 more.

Well I hit my LFS yesterday to purchase some phosphate removing media and lo and behold on the dollar table I found the housing for a Coralife 225 skimmer.

It's simply a large-scale version of the 125. The "fuselage" is a full inch or two wider in diameter, and stands an inch or two taller.

I saw it on the table, looking like the picture above, but not including the collection cup, or pump, or hose to the pump. Not to knock the typical LFS employee, but when I asked if this larger model had a larger collection cup than the 125, he stated incorrectly that the item sitting on the dollar table "was a 125," and also incorrectly added that the 225's "do have a larger thread for the larger collection cup."

It just looked bigger to me. I figured for a dollar, it was worth it to simply have it around for parts.

BOY was I thrilled when I held it next to my Coralife 125. It was in fact a 225. Even better, the collection cup from the 125 fits it perfectly. Surprisingly too, the 225 uses the same pump that comes with the 125.

I took the 125 out of my sump, put the 225 into action, and now that more than 24 hours have passed, I can say this is "a beast" compared to the 125. I'm no mathematician, but it seems like the water column in the 225's housing is about 30% larger in volume. More bubbles, more skimmate.

One day I'll buy a bullet, but for now I'm happier than I was.

225 for the price of the 125 + a buck. Good score!

It's producing more skimmate than the 125.
