Well,I finally ditched the canister filter and installed a sump and was wondering what most people do about cleaning filter socks. It seems they must need cleaning or replacing often or could create nitrates quickly.

Weekly cleaning. I have 2 socks, 1 in use, 1 for replacement. After cleaning sponges and WC I install new sock. Then I wash dirty one in washing machine with 1 cup bleach and use an extra rinse cycle. Let it air dry for a week until my next WC. Easy.

My wife makes my socks for me. I only use them once and toss them in the trash.

So funny story, as I was new to hobby I didn't know socks needed to be changed, lets just say I think I went at least 2 yrs without changing sock.

Now I change every two wks, pick one up at my lfs for $5. I'm too lazy to wash and dry
