i think i have decided to upgrade my lighting to LEDs as well, on another forum, i was urged to not use metal halides because of the temperature, hazards, etc. (i think im going to do a DIY led system from rapidLED.com, ive read good reviews, plus i am a DIY kind of guy)

also i have noticed a lot of gunk building up in my crushed coral gravel. you think it would it be bad if i just went bare bottom for a while until i got the money for a sand bed?

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
Hydrogen sulfide can be released from such a deep sand bed. It is not detectable with a test kit, but will surely kill corals and inverts.

If you can remove all corals, fish and other inverts, water, and place them in a separate container while removing the sand bed. Make sure you remove all sand and detritus and rinse the tank in SW if possible. Expect a mini cycle at worst.

If this seems like too much of a task remove small portions for the sand bed at a time, try not to disturb too much of it at once.

Instead of having a deep sand bed of crushed corals you might want to consider a 1-2 bed of aragonite sand. I like the bare bottom look myself and would go that way except for a goby I keep.

I assumed it was a typo since he'd already listed nitrites.

the light you have will not allow corals unless high up in the tank.if you have hair algae then you have high phosphates .other than the canister and return pump what other power heads do you have?
