I've found blue and red legged hermits are good for the GHA and personally, I like astrea snails. However, you should contact John Maloney at reefcleaners.org. He has some great stuff and really good prices.

ya definatley go to reef cleaners but if the GHA is only on your sand i would just remove it manually before it spreads to your rocks but better yet find the source of the problem and stop the algae from growing

Thanks Guys for the snail insight. If your on the East coast you gotta swing towards Salt Water Fish .COM. The basically give them away. Good stock too IMO

Drew3 What would be causing the GHA on the sand surface so I can stop it at the source.

it could be many things it pretty much high nitrates phosphates or Ph could be outa wack also if you have old lights that could be the problem. if you have a canister filter that probubly the problem or because of your lack of CuC and the fish poop could be decomposing and causing nitrates since nothing is eating it i would suggest gettinga refugium, phosphate reactor and a better CuC

    CUC for my 50 reef:

    30 blue leg hermits
    20 red leg hermits
    10 black margarita snails
    4 turbo snails
    20 astrea snails
    45 nassarius

With this CUC I have no problems with algae. (knocks on wood)

The GHA could be caused by inhibited flow through your substrate. You can use nassarius snails or sand sifting sea stars to allow more flow.

I have had great experiences with the dwarf cerith snails..They only get around 1/2-3/4 of an inch long so you need a bunch of them. They get down into cracks and whatnot that bigger snails can't get into and leave your rocks spotless.
