It's a great idea, your attachment aside, it's ethical to move a fish to a bigger home if it outgrow the one it's in.

Well I guess the thing to do is think before you buy. Don't buy a fish that is going to outgrow your tank.

That being said, I would trade them in if I had an agressive one, or one grew bigger than I expected, or I would just upgrade.

I think it is a waste of money to knowingly buy a fish that is going to grow to large for your tank. Kinda like people that buy sharks and large tangs planning on getting rid of them in a year or two.

I would upgrade my tank before giving a fish away.

If most people knew how difficult is was to get a fish out of a reef aquarium, they'd never ever get a fish that they knew that they'd be getting rid of down the road. Tearing up a reef to catch a fish could easily cause the entire tank to crash. Not worth the aggravation in my opinion.

I don't have a problem with people doing it, but I won't get a fish unless I was planning to upgrade in the future. For example, I have a yellow tang in my 55. He's about 3" long. I plan on upgrading to about a 125 gal tank in about a year. If you're not planning on upgrading though, good luck getting it out.

I dont even take the dead fish out of my tank. I swear, my rock work is a graveyard of bones.

Oh and just to add, i dont see my fish as pets, but as a hobby. That being said tho, i am pretty attached to my clown fish.
