What can I do about tank junk?

    I just set up a new 40gal about a week and a half ago (I'm actually picking up 40lbs of LR today). Everything is really clear except a layer of gunk that's collecting at the top. Do I need to get a protein skimmer to remedy this? Are there any biological remedies that could take care of it? I don't really want a sump because I don't have a cabinet (wouldn't look too good on the living room floor).

    Any advice?:confused::confused::confused:

    Yep a surface skimmer or more agitation of the surface of your water.....

    no, it attaches to the input of your filter, be it canister or Hang on ;)
