What can I get for my reef tank??

First you need to know your target buyer. You mentioned this hobby is not for the poor. Unfortunately for you the poor and middle class might be your target buyers. The rich and wealthy are NOT looking on Craig's list or any other forum for deals. The rich will pay others to build set up and maintain reef tanks for them and they don't buy used equipment. Someone in the lower income bracket is not in the market for such a big tank. Lower income buyers are usually in the market for smaller and nano tanks. So your target buyer is the middle class. With the economy in the toilet if you piece it out you might get $3000. You might consider keeping it a little longer and hope the economy turns around.

 

My old man used to say that something is only worth what you can sell it for. Since you've put alot of money into your setup, then you are the only one that can decide what it's worth... to you.

If it's worth more to you than someone is willing to pay for it, then you'll likely be keeping it for a long while.

There is one thing about respective value i'd like to point out. If you intend to sell the setup, either complete or in parts, then the value will decrease the longer that it takes to sell. Something that no one will buy is worth exactly nothing.

Honestly, if you are trying to make back even half of the money you spent in setting up and maintaining the tank, you are probably not going to have much luck.
