Hi there everyone, i am in the process of piecing together and building my set up, i have a 40 gal corner tank, and plan to have a 15g fuge next to it, on the dresser, with a sump underneath,
i want to make the fuge an attrative part of the set up, as well as a fuge obviously, it is going to have the feed coming in at one end, and just going to have drilled overflow at the other,

does anyone have any ideas what i could put in this fuge? i am still not sure wheather to have a FO main tank, as i am very fond of all the weird and wonderful, coral and invert munching fish!:)

could i use the fuge as a sort of mini reef? or will it not work? few inverts maybe?
any help or ideas will be super duper! ;D

You do not want to put anything in your fuge that will eat your pods. Maybe a snail, but no crabs or fish. Lots of people put algae in the fuge too.

Snails and algae are going to go in mine when I get around to building it. That's about it.

A refugium is not ever going to be attractive if its to do the job its designed to do. Its a swamp not an attraction . When one is working and growing as it should there is no room in it for a fish and the purpose is to export nutrients and if you house algae eating animals in there unless you toss them out also along with the exported grasses then you just created more waste to deal with. No fish no snails no shrimp not nothing but deep sand and grasses and bugs . But hey you can put these in there just don't expect it to do the job you think it will perform . Just are setting up another display tank not a refugium.

Refufium means place of refuge and they where developed and brought along to be a safe place for a Dee sand bed to be safe and to give the sand fauna a safe place to live free from predation and do their magic work and to supply some natural foods . Its just a nasty saltwater swamp/marsh

Damn! Looks like I have two display tanks lol. I took out all my hermit crabs so now hopefully it will start doing its job. I need to add a lot more sand to it though.

If you have room why don't you try a design similar to the one that I built. Have two chambers one in front for display, one in back for function. Have the best of both worlds that way, just a thought ::)

A fuge is the only place to employ a DSB .. I'd have about 4 to 5 inches of high quality aragonite like custom seafloor or the smaller stuff even..As the acids build up the Ph will lower in the sand and it will go in to dissolution and help the carbonate and Ca levels a little . not to mention PO4 and NO3 to some extent .
