OK, so DSB and algae. No snails. Good enough. I would have made a mistake there. What do you recommend as the best algae to have and does it need slow or fast flow?

I myself personally would not give a plug nickel for all the cheado ever drudged up I always used a DSB and a fuge 1/10 the total volume of the main tank and ten 1/10 of the fuges water volume per hr through the fuge . a 100 gal main tank a 10 gal fuge with DSB and then flow about 10 GPH through the algae in the fuge .

Thanks for your input Tangster. Sometimes I just need to hear things or 3 times before it really sinks in. I was mulling some of the same questions as 'jay is new to this'. This helps.

Yes well if you think about it logically then you will see that a fuge is for nutrient exportation thats the whole purpose of them from day one.. But some wanted to morph them into a semi display tank by adding waste making animals to eat the algae . They do but they eat it but they also just add the eaten algae back as more nuturient rich waste its not exported at all. If they would let their fuges to get all nasty and dirty looking then just pull out the algae that had up taken the excess waste nuturients as food and toss it then they would see some results . Then they would see why the algae scrubbers
some here are trying to revive again where replaced by the fuges long ago .. the scrubber is a lot more work but then you don't see animals living in them ? they truly export with every algae laden mat that they pull and bleach soak thats why I simply pull out algae and toss I don't want anything eating it to mahe more waste.

yes i agree with 'gotosleep', thanks tangster, thats a great help, i now know that the 15g display fuge, that is going to be next to my main tank, is no longer going to be a fuge!, its going to be a second display tank, and im gonna cram a fuge underneath with my trickle tower and sump;D

but what am wondering now, is,:- im probably going to keep a fish only main tank, 40g, and this is going to drain into the 15g (ex fuge), can i keep a small reef in this tank with a shrimp or two? and have this flowing into my fuge and sump, and then back up to my main tank, to start the cycle again, or, have both tanks, running through the same sump and fuge, with seperate pumps? i hope i can keep two tanks, one FO, and a REEF, this would be super, as iv talked my girlfriend into the fact that we need the 15g, cos its better for the fish;), so if i could still have it as a reef? i could easily hide the fuge underneath with sump, loverly job;D

sometimes having a crab or shrimp can help with eating larger sized food or whatever may travel into the fuge..i kept a crab in mine about every other week, then id pick him back in the DT....alot of people (those in local reef clubs around here) think its stupid to do this, but when watching my tank...i see the benefits...

and a 'fuge can also look just as nice as a display tank, if not better IMO...ive seen in a recent reef magazine a 'fuge for a tank that is set up like a tide pool....the water rises and drops once and day...the set up is beautiful with mulptiple colored plants...and a nice sized mangrove plant...
