    At MACNA one of the lectures was about this very subject, but for a very different reason. Lighting.
    Light apparently bounces back from both the inside edge of the glass as well as the outside edge of the glass. So painting actually cuts down the amount of light reaching the corals! This also brought up the discussion about allowing coralline to grow across the sides and back... it lowers light penetration!

    That being said, I have a black back,-not by choice, it's a used acrylic tank and the back panel is black acrylic. It does provide nice contrast to the pretty colored fishies, ::) but is a pain trying to keep clean!
