Sand sifting star. Snails. You can add a few things. We dont keep much in there at all.

i am not sure that i can keep a sand sifter in there it is very small.

i was thinking 2-3 nassarius snails and a small hermit or two.

i just dont want to add anything that will eat the pods

No animals its a refugium , the word refuge means a place of safety and all you want in there is deep sand 4 to 5" slow water flows cool K value lamps to increase plant growth and algae plants . A star fish will eat some stuff as will any crabs or sand sifting critters , The fuge is supposed to be a safe place for the sand bed and all the bugs that live in it ..

i am just concerned that i will have a buildup of detritus on the sand causing high nitrates which would defeat the purpose of the fuge

there should be enough plants to counter act any build up of detritus

plus, the detritus gives the pods FOOD!
