ya keep it free of animals and if you want to stock it with pods and that gives them a safe place to reproduce especially if you have a mandarin fish

My fuge has a couple of nassarius snails. 2 small blue leg hermits, a pistol shrimp that is on death row, and a trillion bristleworms. I put a few rocks in the fuge too. I would say bristleworms are a good addition to a fuge if you really want something in there besides pods. They non stop stir up the sandbed and multiply like crazy. The detritus is supposed to get stuck in the fuge to feed the macroalgaes, thats how they grow. But bristleworms will also keep things in check. A fuge is not supposed to be clean, its supposed to be a swampy area that breaks crap down.

I don't understand why so many people use sand in their refugiums. Mud is the way to go. Walt Smith Gold Figi mud is awesome! You have enough sand in your main display. Really all that you are doing is collecting the detrius for the macro alge to grow. With the mud I mentioned both your fuge and main display will flurish. Sand must be stirred otherwise the top layer will harden and block airflow for oxegen and co2
