Just about any fish/shrimp/crab I've ever owned had a name after a while. Some of the names were based on their behavior and some of the names were simply made up.

    For example:

Snapper is a brand of lawnmower and was the name of my lawnmower blenny
Corky is the name of a clown that I named one of my perculas (clownfish)
I had a psuedochromis that was named, "yalittle". It was short for you little piece of crap.

I've had numerous mantis that were one of the dangerous types. First there was Fluffy, then there was Cuddles, then there was Sugar, and then there was Spice. My smaller mantis usually had more boring names.

All of my animals have had names....some interesting....some boring.

I personally don't come up with the names, but that's my girlfriend's job. I keep the fish nice and happy and bring home new ones and she names them based on their personality and appearance:

2 False Perculas: Nemo & Mohawk
    Coral Beauty: Princess Bananahammock
    Six line: Watermelon

    (Fish that have passed on)
    Diamond Goby: Toby the Goby
    Blackback Butterfly: Rocky

and we don't name the inverts because there are just too many. ;D

Er We Have To Name Them?

    hi,
My wife named the little clown NEMo, and the little Bleemy is Hoover like the vaccum, and the sand goby is called Eureka after another vaccum, and the coral Banded shrimp she calls Rocky cause he always puts up his claws like a boxer.
we haven named everybody yet thank goodness it would really bite if something happened to one of the named chosen, like I need more stress.:p

While I rarely name them, my 18-year-old daughter insists that they all have names. Some of my tank's inhabitants are (or have been):

Yellowtail Blue Damsel = Meeple (for "Mean People")
Banded Coral Shrimp = Jacques and Jacques Two
    Decorated Firefish = Ember
    Lawnmower Blenny = Scooter
    Coral Beauty = Beauty
    Red Saddleback Clown = Bully
    Long Tentacled Anemone = Emma

The Yellow Tang is named for the character in "Finding Nemo", who's name escapes me at the moment.
