So I have a new ro/di unit that I will be using to fill my 65 with in a few months but was wondering what would I do if I made some RO/DI water today for my sons fowlr? I can't imagine its ok to let it sit for that long without use. How do you guys store your ro/di units between prolonged uses and even day to day uses?

If you're using it often then it is okay to sit for a few days. just let some water run through it for a few minutes first.
For longer periods of time (like your case) I heard to refrigerate them... but that was back in like 2005 so I am not sure how accurate it is now.

Alternatively, you can just turn it on for an hour every few days and run everything to waste. Obviously its a waste of water but its also a lot cheaper than replacing a membrane or media.

Hmm if you wanted to help get started you could grab some brute force cans and purchase some bacteria and dry rock. Give the rock a great head start while cycling and when your ready to start your tank you will have fully cured rock pest free. A great start. Use dry sand, seed with a cupnor two from local members tank and you could have your cycle done in a much faster time when your ready to go. In the mean time, use the ro machine weekly for water changes for the rock, and not have a limbo period. Dingo is right, storing in a fridge of the ro membrane is ke, also in an airtight package, see things deteriote the longer they are in contact with air. As per the di resin and pre filters I would assume same tactics to be used, air tight sealed in a fridge.

It is best to use the unit every 10-14 days if possible and make larger batches rather than more frequent small batches to keep the membrane flushed.

Store the system in a dark, climate controlled place like a closet, corner or under a cabinet away from bright direct lighting and temperature extremes. Leave the water in the housings so the filters and resin stay wetted or moist at all times.

If it is going to be a couple months or more, remove the DI cartridge and RO membrane, place them in sealed zip loc or seal a meal bags with some RO/DI water inside and place them in the back of the refrigerator.

I always find its easy to use the RO portion for drinking water, pet watering and cooking so they get plenty of use.
