In my closet, my 60g sump is on the floor on carpet. I am taking out all the carpet. I don't care if it is on the bare floor, but I want to insulate it. I always see people putting liners underneath, but never knew why, or what it was.

What can I insulate the bottom of my tank with, or is it necessary?

I don't think it's necessary.....probably because I never considered it. My sump is mounted under the DT on some lengths of 2x4.

I thought about that too. My thing is that it is on bare floor. Great in the Summer, but not in the Winter. I guess there is no one way that is going to be best for everything.

If you're worried about that, get a piece of pink corning's foam insulation board at Home Depot. Cut it to the size you want, and put it between the tank and the floor.

Never set a sump flat on a floor once you get water under it they will never be totally dry I always set mine up on a vented platform or lay 2x2 or something down to set them on to allow air circulation ..

I got some of that interlocking rubber mat. Mainly for me to have some cushion. That pink board would be a good platform to insulate.

I will also cut some out to allow air under. I also thought about water getting under it and no way really to stop it, unless it's raised.

I would suppose people do it for noise (vibration) reduction.

I put a tarp on the floor inside of my stand in case of any floods or leaks from my fuge and sumps. I used a styrofoam sheet to even out the inconsistancies in the level of the floor for the sump to sit on too.
