Awkward turtle, before becoming intensely popular was a discreet way to show a situation was awkward between a group without letting everyone know..
As in 2 couples at dinner and while the one couple fights, the wife throws a quick awkward turtle to her husband as a way of expressing the situation without being too obvious..

Yep, just think of awkward turtle as hand signals. Then a bunch of middle school/high school girls grabbed ahold of it and made it into all sorts of useless stupid garbage. Sooo...it died out. Things like this die out when the slower ditses of society catch on and start getting annoying. Like a radio station that hears a song after it was released and starts playing the song so much, the song gets "killed".

And I think of >.< as the facial expression of "D'oh" or frustration.


I don't know what this squinty eyes anime mumbo jumbo is...it was originally a sign of stress or frustration.

IE: "I just failed a chemistry test >.<"
