Some heaters make a popping noise when they turn on and off. Not nearly as loud as a pistol shrimp, but similar. Kind of like a solenoid.

I suppose it isn't entirely impossible it just seems unlikely to me. The only rock I have that wasn't dry was my N. wennerae's main den. He spent most of the time I had him there. I would think he would have eaten it. He did manage to find a hitch hiking crab hidden in the rock about that size and ate it.

Not sure but when one of my large turbo snails died I flipped his shell over and a large bubble came out. Perhaps the snail extracts oxygen from the water and releases carbon dioxide into his shell to make it more buoyant and easier to move?

I'm not running a heater. House temp is set to 79 and the tank stays between 79-80 on its own.

I had tons of the tiny pistols that inwall mentioned in my tank. There were probably 50 of them on my 100# of rock. I don't have them anymore, I guess they died out, but the holes in the rocks were just big enough for them to fit into. My CBS tried to catch them constantly, but definitely couldn't fit in the <5mm tunnels they lived in. That may be why the mantis didn't catch and kill them all.

my vote is for damsel... as i have heard fish making a racket at night time.

if the shrimp were that small then idk if they could be that loud. i have never had pistols but i know they can have tremendous force...

I vote for pistol shrimp also. I have the same thing going on in my tank for the past year but I've never seen it come out. Those things can ride in on a piece of rock or even a small frag. Not too difficult to accidentally introduce one into your tank.

A mantis wouldn't have a problem widening the rock. I watched my wennerae spend about 30 minutes opening up a crevice to get a tiny hitch hiker crab, that likely contained fewer calories then he just burnt.

I was wondering the same thing about tiny pistols making such a big noise. This popping is as loud if not louder than my full grown O. havanensis (3") mantis shrimp.

I know you don't have any in the tank, but my Banggai Cardinals make a popping sound with their mouths all the time. It's super loud, I hear it all night when I'm up near the tank.

Pistol's are MUCH louder than mantis. A teeny tiny pistol can make more noise than a 7" O.s.

Maybe I have a pistol then. How long does it take for them to get to any reasonable size?

It would have been in the tank since Jan 24th 2009
