IMO the best way to pick your stock is to first chose your "centerpiece fish". This would be the fish you "have to have" and are excited for all of your guests to see. Then, figure out which fish & inverts are compatible with it. Make a list, then go through each fish and make sure it will be compatible with the other fish & inverts. Then see what you have left and what the bio-load will be. Try to get a good mix of fish in terms of what they eat. You may not want a tank full or just carnivores or herbivores. See what the feeding requirements are for each individual fish. You may not want to kee a fish that requires multiple daily feedings with others that only need to eat once a day or every other. When you finalize your list, then go through and figure out the order to add everything. Timid & shy fish are always first. But keep in mind some fish also can't be added until the tank is well established and mature due to the flora & fauna it eats.

Hope this helps and good luck!

I agree with Marshall, try to choose fish that live on different areas of the reef. A mix of open water, cave dwelling, perching, and fish that live on the sand bed will reduce aggression while making an interesting enviorment.
