I have a 55 and have a K1 and a MP40, I run total flow inside the tank around 2000-2500gph depending on what the Mp40 is set on. I used to run a K3 and K1. It's better to have two smaller powerheads then 1 large one. Maybe add a K2 to help with dead spots, or try to trade the K4 for a K3 or something like that. But anyways, no it's not too much flow.

I have a K1 and 2 MP40w's in my 58g reef. SPS love high flow, fish love high flow. LPS and softies... not so much.

more points of flow are better than one large source.

(the MP40's are actually for my 180 when I get it set up, for now it looks like a hurricane in the tank, and they're both on low, anti-synch)

Oh, and the number I used for flow rate in my reef is 30x the tank volume per hour. so a 55 would need about 1650 gph of flow.

I got 2 maxi-jet 600 convert to sureflows (1400gph each) x 2 plus a mag3 return pump (350 + 2800gph) = 3150 total system gph. its a pain to find the sweet spots for the pumps and for corals. but once you got it just leave it. fish will get used to it.

tip: I aim both powerheads off the front and back glass to make a whirl pool effect, back to my overflow box.

I've been told that the total flow should be
    20 x 55=1,100 gph for soft corals
    30 x 55=1,650 gph for SPS corals
I am not an authority on this I'm just the messenger.

i have 2 2's in opposite corners and a dead center facing forward on the back wall.

no dead spots as far as i can tell. and the 1 in the middle is just enought to kidna mix up the flow from the 2's
