What happened to my FrogSpawn?!

I've had a very nice FrogSpawn for about two & a half months, never had an issue with it. Over the last few days I noticed it wasn't coming out as much, it has slowly been falling apart, I have no idea why. All my other corals are absolutely fine. Water params are fine I haven't dosed with anything. I have not changed anything about the tank. I did re-position it slightly but did it with care.

- 1st pic is the before (like a few weeks ago)
- 2nd is how it looked today, horrendous like it has decayed halfway to the stalk.
- 3rd pic is of my other FS which is doing marvelously.

This is frustrating as this FS cost me a pretty penny & it was my favorite coral .

Could it possibly bounce back from this, it looks horrible!

 

What type of light do you have on your tank? What have you been feeding it? Are there any neighboring corals that may have stung it? Do you dose any trace elements?

 

I've had a Coralife PC Lunar fixture on it 260w, had no issues the past few months with that light. There is nothing extremely close to it, my leather corals were growing fairly quickly so I had re-positioned the FS farther away. It never came in contact with any other corals though. I do not dose trace elements yet, my water params were ok last I checked about a week ago.

 

i had the same problem with a frogspawn of mine... it turned out to be a massive worm that was feeding on the frogspawn. check it out at night a few times...

 

How big is your tank? Sorry if this was already answered elsewhere, I'm new

Depending on the depth of your tank, that may not be enough light. How high up in the tank is the coral? If you could take a picture of the overall system, that may help more. How did you reposition it? Just rotating it around or moving it to a more shallow/deep location?

Check the water params again as they may have gotten out of line since you last checked. If they are all perfect, I'd start dosing small amounts of trace elements (about 1/4 - 1/2 of whatever they recommend on the bottle). I'm personally a believer (I'm sure many others will disagree with me here) that you can have aquarium water which is actually too clean for coral. You never know where exactly a coral came from and if it was in a crevice or somewhere in the ocean where a little waste collected, it may have become use to that.

However, if your water quality has gone out of whack, don't worry about the trace elements... get everything back in line first and see how that works.

 

The tank is a 55g, the FS was not moved lower in the light column just shifted to the left about 4". I have numerous other corals, mushrooms, polyps, etc, they're all doing fine showing great color & growth. I feel like it wouldn't make sense that all other fish and corals are fine but this one. The FS was gorgeous under the same PC lighting for two months so I also don't think it's a lighting issue.

Dingo, I will have to check and see if something's feeding on my FS.

I'd try moving it to the highest point in your tank. Odds are it won't hurt anything, but it may help. Please let us know what the water params are at currently too!

 

Depressing, I'm watching my FS melt before my eyes. Pieces are falling off in the current under my moon lights. I think it's beyond saving at this point. It's like watching $100 bill burn and it really bums me out, oh well...

 

My first thought is the lights. Now I am not 100% sure so take this for what it's worth. Seems you have standard PC lighting which are good for about 5-6 months. After 2 months they will have lost a proportional percentage of their intensity. Frog Spawn are LPS and would venture to say need T5s or better and the appropriate Cal (400-450 ppm) and Mag (1200-1350 ppm) concentrations. Also read they like to be fed MYSIS or Brine shrimp once a week.

 

I've seen some very excellent advice in this thread; however, one thing that hasn't been mentioned is water flow. Too much current can cause the FS (as well as many other LPS corals) to become injured by its own skeleton.
