Reading the "what have you done to your tank today" thread and seeing Dienerman's post I have decided to start this. I think there are a lot of good people in this world, and I think a lot of them try to help others.

A good friend of mine, who got me into the salt water scene passed away a few days before Christmas. Unfortunately at the age of 21 after battling cancer. I helped him build his 72 bow when he upgraded and he would come over while I was building my sump room. We went to frag shows, local fish stores and had a lot of laughs.

He found great pleasure in his tank. In his last days it was all he could do to stand and he would still make it into the room that the tank was in. after his passing I have been taking care of it for his mother. I am not sure the long term plans for it, but today it got a 30 gallon water change, cleaned up the power heads, cleaned the skimmer, changed the socks and media. I went out and bought water just so I could have the jugs to fill from my house when needed.

Cody I am gonna miss you buddy, but your tank is shining.

I hope this touches anyone who reads this and you take some time out to help your fellow man out.

Thanks for starting the thread Reefbuilder! What a great story too. It s always hard to loose someone close but to keep their memory alive through a tank is an awesome thing. This thread really follows the theme of this site which is dedicated to passing along what we have learned to others. Im sure there are others that have some great stories to share!

Lets keep this alive - lets here some stories. How have you helped the fellow reefer? Got a child involved, helped out a beginner or donated some products? I know there are some good stories out there.

This is already in a different thread but.. I gave away close to 100lbs of LR from my system to a kid locally that is up-sizing from a 75 to a 210. My first tank was given to me by a friend and have had many hook ups along the way. I figure if I'm not using it someone else can have it (withing reason of course).

I often give away coral, or trade beer- however I always put the good end of the bargain in their hands.
I have given away old equipment, coral, etc.
I am also hosting the Wisconsin Reef Society January Party at my home, for the third year in a row. This is on my expense- I do get a years membership though- about $15.
At this party a give away alot of frags, and trade some too.

I have been given many coral and frags over the years also- what comes around-goes around.

I had people come help with my large tank transfer 7 months ago, and I also have helped others when doing the same.

There are some great people I have met in this hobby.

I'm really touched by your story reefbuilder. it made me want to go out and make a gift happen. I'm so sorry about your friend, so young, I believe he knows the tank is just fine :)

Our local forum had a gift raffle over Christmas. Everyone on the forum named a fellow member who has helped them out in one way or another in this hobby. All those names were thrown in a hat and picked to receive frags and some other stuff in the raffle. I thought it was very cool to see that happen. Here's the youtube of the raffle on Christmas morning I believe.
