Im pretty new to this hobby and asked this same question. From the answers I received I decided to run my actinics for 10 hours and my daylights for 8 hours. I also have moonlights that come on when the others go off.

My lighting cycle is as follows:

Atinincs: 9 am to noon and 7 pm to 9 pm
    Halides: noon to 7 pm
LEDs (night lights) 24 hours a day

    hope this helps you some

So i have another question, about time schedule. I'd figure i would post it here to see if i can get some responses before starting another thread.

Is it ok to run the lights during the night instead of the day? Or would this screw up the corals and fish to much?

The reason why i ask is, because my tank gets kind of hot during the day, ranges from 79-83, and that's with lights off. I think once i get my Tek light up if i have the lights running during the day, and it will raise temps and create a horrid algae bloom. So i thought. I'm also not home during the day, so i wouldn't really be able to view the tank with lights on.

So i was thinking, for a schedule, i get off of work at 3pm monday through thursday, would it be ok to run the lights from 3pm to 3am? I think i wouldn't mind sleeping with the tank light on during the night.

Do you guy's think this would be ok?

I does not matter what time of day or night your lights go on and off. If you have the lights off during the day you will still get some ambient light in the tank so you probably don't have to run the lights for a full 12 hours unless you have something that is very light demanding. I assume you will havefish before you have any corals and fish don't need all that light and the less light time, the less algae(hopefully).

I would seriously consider getting a fan. If you have a canopy you can drill a 2" hole in the side and get a computer type fan and attach it with the screws then run the electric cord to the timer for the lights so it comes on when the lights come on. This will save some evaporation. If you don't have a canopy you can get a clip on fan at Home Depot and attach it to the rear of the tank.
