What is a sump?

Okay will someone explain sump to me what is it hows it work whats its purpose. What would be needed for a DIY sump....

Same questions for a refugium...any diff in the two

 

a sump is for equipment, heaters and such, a refuge is for growing different types of macro algae to help water quality.

Most people use Instant Ocean for their mix. I also use it and I have never had a problem.

It's fairly priced, nothing to crazy.
