what is better?

    is a canister filter or a sump better for a 29 gallon tank that im making it into a reef aquarium!

    A sump is always going to be the better option for reefs.

    ok thank you for all your answers...could use please give me reasons on why a sump will be better for a reef aquarium?

    by sump do you mean wet/dry or maybe some kind of filter sock????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

    a sump would be better because

    It increases the total volume of water
    It creates additional surface area for gas exchange
    it provides a location for equipment - heater, skimmer etc
    if combined with a fuge, it creates a perfect enviroment for Nitrate reduction (using DSB, Chaeto, other Macro algaes etc)

    ok thanks steve another qustion now with a sump do i need to have my tank drilled or not and what do you mean by (combined with a fuge)

    Drilling makes a much neater looking set up IMO but you can purchase overflow kits designed to hang on the sides of non drilled tanks

    Fuge or refugium is an area that can be inside a sump ( seperated by glass walls or baffles) in which you can add sand and algaes

    some people use a seperate tank for the fuge, but it can be incorporated into a section in the sump

    oooooo ok....i was thinking about going with a fuge sump would u think that would be the best thing to do for a 29 gollan tank?how meany gallons do u think my sump should be?and what all gos inside a fuge sump?
