SCOOTus, no "uh" in Latin :) And yeah, they are generally considered to be harmless.

    Cheers,

Also most nudis are NOT reefsafe. Not that its a nudibranch, but just to be clear.

Then by your reasoning, it should be SCOOToos, correct? I pronounce it the same way as your phonetic spelling, however.

I agree that Latin tends to be butchered tho...I speak fluent Spanish, so much of my pronunciation follows the vowel sounds of that language.

I stand corrected and surprised Greg hadn't flogged me before this. He simply refuses to say a common name and pretty much corrects my pronunciation every single time..... can't even let one slip by.... not even on my birthday! Ha! My pronunciation is related to another word that would be found in an Urban Dictionary.

LOL well, it's all confused by the Classical Latin/Church Latin/Americanized Latin pronunciations (and the Redneck Latin that's spoken here in Texas, which is a *******ized mixture of all the above, with some ad libbing thrown in). Most snail guys in the U.S. would say SCOOTus out of laziness, a few of the professors say SCOOToos. That's one of the easy ones, at least everyone knows what you're talking about if you say either of those, or even SCUTtus...the American guys mostly pronounce Cypraea "SIP-ree-uh" while the Europeans mostly say "kee-PRY-ah" :) By the way, common American pronunciations for the same Latin words vary considerably between, say, malacologists and botanists. I wish there were a universal standard, or maybe a living Roman to dictate the standards for us all.

+1 Pretty much all nudis are not reef safe, and should be left to experts to care for.
