    In simple terms, its a coil, inside which, there is limited oygen present, so the bacteria species that convert Nitrate to Nitrogen gas multiply readily and thus deal with nitrates

    with the standard live rock (base rock thats become live) and SSB set ups there is insufficient real estate for these anaerobic bacteria to colonise so whilst the amonia to Nitrite conversion is good, and the Nitrite to Nitrate conversion is also optimum, the lack of anaerobic (no oxygen) areas means nitrates can escalate

    an nitrate reductor - helps to ensure there is a balance of all the bacteria species present in the system to ensure all these paramaters achieve 0
