I was doing a water change and cleaning algae off the glass and this is what I saw on the powerhead.

What is it, is it harmful, and how do i remove it if it is harmful?

I can almost see a power head. There's a ton of stuff on it. I'm guessing your talking about the red bulk on top? But it looks like cyano bacteria. I like to keep my power head vents clear. It's hard to blow water out if it can't pull water in. I'm surprised the magnet even spins. Lol

What powerhead? Take that glob you have there and dip it in a vinegar/water mix and scrub it clean.

With a powerhead like that, I would hate to see what your display tank looks like. (No offence).

Wow, I was definitely misinformed. I was told that it is unnecessary to clean the green and purple algae off the power head. Thanks for all your replies, If no one said cyanobacteria, I would've probably just left it. I have replaced the powerhead with a new one.

The rest of tank is clean. I have a great selection of livestock that each does their part in keeping the tank clean, And myself doing water changes twice a week.

The green and purple coralline algae is fine on the powerhead only. Anything else should be removed as it will less the effectiveness of the pump.

Yep, the hard stuff that encrusts is fine (Coraline Algae). But anything soft and squishy that may stop the PH from sucking in water is lowering your flow.

Take a cup full of White Vinager, and let that sucker sit in it for a half hour. Dissasemble, and take a toothbrush (or like) to it. It'll look brand new!
