    Hi Everyone,

I am about to add Live Rock to my tank but I am confused about the calculation for Live Rock even more odd in many articles the term "Over Loaded" seems used!

So I assume there must a calculation for live rock x n = correct lbs where n must be either fish (live stock) or gallons within the tank.

I think the general rule of thumb is 1 - 2 pounds of dry rock per gallon.

Alright ok! So 75 - 150 lbs of live rock is needed within my tank. Seems a lot ...

I read that 1-1.5lbs. of live rock per gallon is good (or more if you want). If you get live rock that has a lot of surface area (holes and crevices) and is somewhat lightweight, then you should be fine if you stay around the 1lb. per gallon suggestion.

You can get dry rock from reefcleaners.com and seed it with live rock from the fish store. They have great lightweight rock with tons of surface area. When we went to our fish store, the rock was very dense compared to what we got on-line. The density of the rock depends on what ocean the rock is from.

Thanks for the help! - Are most people buying primarily dry rock and then mixing it with Live rock at a later stage?

For my 55 & 46, I bought dry rock, placed it in dry tanks, added sand, then water and ran it for a week or so. In the meantime I ordered live rock online and obviously added it as soon as I got it. The die-off from the LR will actually help cycle the tank and you won't need anything else to cycle it. You do not want to add uncured LR to a tank with livestock though!
