I have this...thing...growing in my sump. Not sure if its good or bad, but I did start a culture down there and want to make sure it isn't something important before I go yanking it out.

I think removing it won't create a problem. You will be exporting excess nutrients by removing it.

My sump always seems to have cyano. It grows all over my mangrove roots and always starves out my chaeto and caulerpa. Never have any in the display but it still annoys me being in the sump. I usually do a 4 day black out when it gets bad. Works, but doesn't kill it all.

We have it in our sump too, but it hasn't gotten so bad on the surface. Usually we leave the lights on 24/7, but I'm thinking of doing the opposing photo periods between the tank & the sump cuz my bf hates the cyano & I'm getting there LOL.

I run my lights 12 hours on 12 off so IDK if that has anything to do with it?

It likes light. When I move my big ball of chaeto around, the areas that are shaded are clean under it, and the areas that aren't...aren't.

I usually don't worry about removing the cyano but i flip the chaeto once a week. this keeps the cyano from smothering the chaeto. i have a smaller fuge with caulerpa and i flip it as well.

I get cyano build up on top of my chaeto ball just like you do. I scoop it out with a cup every 2 weeks or so. No cyano in the DT though, this stuff just loves my fuge for some reason. I dont mind it in there just as long as it doesnt choke my chaeto.
