Hi everyone. This thing started growing on a rock that some zoas came on like 6-7 months after I got the zoas. When I first noticed it growing, I left it because it looked kinda cool. It started covering up some of the zoas so I broke it off and glued it to another rock yesterday,. Anyone know what it is? Thank you!

Mushroom of some sort? When I removed it from the rock it was actually hard. It has like a hard exoskeleton with little tentacle looking things coming off it.

From the description & what I can see in the pic, sounds like ingtar is correct.

weird looking fungia but those radial stony ridges are pretty definitive.

Oh wow, I just read about it and apparently they secrete toxic mucus that cover up and kill other corals. It's a good thing I removed it from the Zoa rock. When I removed it from the rock it got really slimy too(must of been the toxins). You think it would be ok to keep it though since the rock I glued it to is far away from anything else.

Actually, most corals have some type of toxic defense. If they don't have stinging sweeper tentacles, they release toxins into the water to protect their space. That's why it's a good idea to keep any 2 species separated and run carbon in your system.

Okay thanks. yeah i know that most corals have some form of toxin including the zoas that the mushroom was growing over. But the article I read regarding the mushroom just made it sound so menacing. lol.
