    cyano and excessive diatoms are a product of bad water quality... mostly silicates in the water.
    A cure is to change to RODI water and let the cyano consume all of the remaining nutrients and then it will be gone. Increased skimming will help to speed up this process.

    I used to have that problem a lot too, and I myself used tap water, I switched to RODI water and the problems slowly went away. It definitely the way to go. If it helps I got a 100gpd RODI unit from Melevsreef.com for about $169.00. I think that's pretty inexpensive compared to other units, I've had mine for almost a year now and I'm very happy with it.
