I bought this shrimp a couple weeks ago. It's hands down a pistol, I hear it shooting off every now and then, but I can't seem to find a name for it wherever I search, and the reason I ask is beause about a week after he went in, I found my small flame angel dead in front of its den, and I've yet to find my clown goby. He's innocent until proven guilty because i actually haven't seen him kill anything, I understand those fish could've died other ways and he just scavenged, but yesterday I saw him flat out shoot my starry blenny while the blenny was in his hole, and I noticed him breathing quite fast the past week or so, so maybe he's been hit before?? The shrimp is one of the coolest things in my tank, but if this turns out to be some kind of aggressive species I'm just gonna take it in and ask my LFS to order a randalls pistol.

It's about 1.5 inchs, grayish brown with 3 or 4 blue "peacock" like spots on its tail and a multi shaded claw, looks exactly like the pic I finally found, also paired immediately with my YWG.

    Hi, welcome to 3reef.

I have only had Tiger pistols, they were all well behaved, except for dragging frags and small clams into their borrows.

An image while the shrimp is in the tank would probably bring out it's true coloration for an easier ID.

The link below may be of assist, since you know it's true coloration. And as you posted best to assume innocent until you know for sure.

    Good Luck.

Doesn't seem to match any on the list, and can't get him to come all the way out of his den, but I got a pic of him creeping out a bit, his tail is no different though, his body is just more gray than the pic I found online. Thanks for the response, probably just gonna trap him and bring him back and not worry about it.

Has anyone had situations where pistols would kill bigger fish? I mean can they kill bigger fish?

I have heard or read such on the forums. Personally I never had a fish go missing or die an unexplained death when a pistol was present.

My pistols seemed to get severally annoyed with large clams. They would start their clicking in response to not be able to budge the clam or carry the clam down their burrow.

I would worry about a smaller fish sharing the same zone as a pistol although, like perhaps a mandarin.

I have an identical species just a little smaller. It came with a large Zoa colony I purchased a while back. I then bought a YWG and they immediatly bonded. I hear him click often (daily) but he hasn't harmed anything in my tank. Most clicks seem to be a warning to snails and hermits that get close to his burrow.
I do not feed him directly.
