    20k all day... IMO you should not skimp on the quality of the bulb. You really get what you pay for. We run all Ushio 20k bulbs (250w, 400w, and 1,000w) on magnetic ballasts here. Your ballast selection also makes a substantial impact on the color output of any bulb, which is a point I believe is not discussed nearly enough. My $0.02...

    14k or 20k radium (more like a 14k+)

    most 20ks are too dark... i like the blue but they just aren't bright enough imo... i've seen 400w 20k that looks like 70w.

    14k is just about the right blend, except for a 20k radium, which is pretty much the perfect reef light imo... just damn expensive.
