I think refugium specifics are different from system to system too. I've noticed some species of algae do better in some systems but do terrible on others. Trial and error seems to be the only route, and maybe that's true for lights as well. Lucky for us refugium bulbs are usually relatively cheap. I've been trying a 6500 k LED par bulb for awhile and I don't think it's worked at all.

from my understanding 6500 seems to be the sweet spot with most plants but 3500-8000 will work

We run a Illumilux 12" cycled 12 on/off opposite of main lighting and have seen promising growth and health...
The picture of course is initial set-up...Ill post "after' soon...

We have played with numerous "K" configurations...and love the progress, feedback our fuge has given us with this current set-up...Just our .02...

    I've been using a 16 W, 6500 K Phillips R30 fluorescent flood light.

Over the last month I'd estimate my chaeto has doubled in biomass under that light... only about 50% of the growth I was hoping for.

I've been lighting it on an opposite schedule to my display tank, which means I'm giving it 9 hours of dark/15 hours of light.

Ive used a mixture of 6500 and 5100 k cfl bulbs. All 26 watt bulbs. I have had alot of growth with both types of bulb.

I think for my 75 ill mix it up 6500 and some 5000 spectrum light. I have the same bulb Jake mentioned. Its only been on for less than a week, so well see how it works out.

Ok so to piggyback on this! I have a hob CPR medium fuge that I put some chaeto in and have tried both these lights and it just seems to slowly wither regardless of which one! The top is your standard 10 g hood with a power glo t8 18k 15watt bulb that says its for planted aquariums and the bottom is a fuge set up with 2 13 watt 6700k daytime and blue actinic bulbs! That should be ideal right?
