    Hi,

Pardon me if this question has already been answered elsewhere on the forum. I looked briefly and couldn't find it.

I'm wondering what type of pump/powerhead is best for those that keep anemones? Are those newer styles that don't have an intake and just circulate water pose a threat to the anemone? Also, I don't have a sump and don't want one.

    Liz

all power heads are considered to be a threat to an anemone. Just keep the power heads off when you introduce the anemone untill it stops moving around and picks a permanent spot. Then pray that it does not release from its spot and float into your power head. hahaha

Standard powerheads are always a problem. However, ecotech pumps, come with sponge wraps to prevent inverts and anemones from being sucked into the impellers.

Why would you not want a sump, and what exactly does that have to do with flow, lol. Just put a sponge pad around the powerhead.

Having a sump is a personal choice, not a necessity. FWIW, I don't want one, either. I fail to see the humor in your post. As for flow, the return line pumps water back into the DT, most definitely creating circulation. :p

As already mentioned, some powerheads come with sponge covers for the intake. You could also buy one separately and modify it if necessary to fit any pump. Alternatively, you could affix a piece of nylon stocking over any powerhead intake.

Well, why have all the equipment in the display? And even without a sump, the return line should not be your main source of circulation. If you don't want one, that is fine by me, but in order to successfully run a large reef tank, you will most certainly need one. A nano is okay, but a 500 gallon tank? An HOB just wouldn't cut it. Back to the powerhead discussion.

Dont know what size your.tank is but im betting.its not 500 g. Also what kind of Anenome. My sebae likes quite a bit of indirect flow. I have 2 750 s and 2 425 s in a 90. I have also seen anenomes with lots of flow and some.with very little. Im personally saving my pennies for a mp60 or two.

Thanks for replying everyone. I don't want to put a sponge over the powerhead intake because I'm always having to clean it. I don't want a sump bc I'm not good with all the DIY stuff, and besides I've heard horror stories about hoses coming loose and it causing thousands of dollars worth of water damage to their homes, not to mention all their livestock. It would be nice not to have all that equipment in the tank, but for my scenario, it's just not worth the risk. I am thinking about getting one of those HOB fuges, maybe I can at least put the heater in there?? I will look into the ecotech pump. Thanks!! :)
