just wondering what kind of sand do you all use for your reef, what size grain, how deep.

what is better for a reef cover , meaning what sand size is less likely to accumulate waste in and on it?

i have 1-3" bed using sugar sized and i think the argamax select but not sure. any ways it seems that the areas were the larger grain sizes of the select has come to the surface, those areas seem to attract more detritus.

so im wondering what grain size is most likely to hold more unwanted nutrients, and what one will hold the least.

if i do not have a dsb should i not be using sugar sized.

how do you clean the seaflor stuff.

do you do a deep syphon clean or just dust off the top, or not at all?

The best way to clean your sand is to put more stuff in your tank that cleans it for you. Of course you don't want to over feed.
If you're getting detrius build up on the sand it could mean you have too little flow in the tank to keep it suspended in the water column.

If you're setting up a new tank stay away from the larger sand. It's like a detrius magnet.

I'm using the Figi pink in my dislpay. It's a good happy medium. ;D

my tank is already set up. and i have flow rate 0f about 25x, 2 maxi 1200 and a koralia 3 hooked up to a wave maker. plus scwd from my return mag 7 . i do not think its possible to get any more flow in my tank with out my lps polyps coming off thier skeletons.lol

but yeah u said what i wanted to hear the larger grain size is detritus magnets. ive been sifting out the larger grain sizes leaving only the sugar sized, the side that ive done already stays much cleaner , than the side that contains the larger grain mix.

and i did get 4 super tonga nass. snails
how many is the max you would use of these snails in a 60 gal, id like to get more cause they do a fantastic cleaning job.

Yea bluephish those nass. snails are great at keeping the sand stirred with out sifting it or borrowing deep into it.
I'm thinking you could get away with 30 of those in your 60 gallon no problem and you might be able to get away with 60. I can't remember how many Tangster told me to use though.

Sounds like you've got plenty of flow. How about filtration? Don't mean to pry, just trying to get a feel for what you're working with. ;D
