Hey guys the other night I was looking at my tank with a flashlight after the lights had been out about an hour and noticed LOADS of these small snails all over the live rock

They have a pointy shell are about as big of a grain of rice and look like a miniature version of the snails you see that suck at Tridacnid clams mantles, However I dont have ANY clams in my tank, Also these snails did not appear to be on or bothering ANY of my coral but instead seemed to stay on the rocks only
Is it possible to be a snail in the Cerithidae family and they are only hamrless detritus eaters?
I will attempt to take a picture but they are only 1/8" big at best so it's gonna be tough

I dont know how I would have gotten them in the tank as I havent added them and I have only added 3 corals in the last month but none of them had anything on them as I checked and got them from a trusted buddy's frag tank, I added a rose mille, ORA bird of paradise and a red monti cap so its not like they would have had a place to hide on any of those pieces, plus I looked them over before putting them in

Also if they are pyramid snails do they eat things other than clams?

Also FWIW I will be adding a hawaiin mystery wrasse to my tank in a few days so should I not worry to much about these guys?

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
They can be parasitic to snails, usually larger snails like Turbo's but anything snail might do.

They will not kill the snail, they just come out at night and literally suck out their bodily fluids. If you have not looked at night you might want to.

Unfortunately Wrasses are diurnal and snails nocturnal.

    Beautiful fish though.

This is pretty much the classic description of rissoid behavior. If they aren't pyramidellids, and it sounds like they're not, that's probably what they are. They are harmless. Most rissoid species are white or whitish, and may look very much like pyramidellids. If they are brown or orangish, they may be Cerithidea species instead, which are also harmless species which feed on cryptic sponges.

    Cheers,

    Don

I've seen Pyramidellae infest large Astreas as well, and they do indeed kill the snails...not outright, but it doesn't take long. I tried to find Renee's pic showing this, but no luck...

As for a wrasse to keep their numbers down, wrasses are diurnal, and the snails are nocturnal, so unless the wrasse is lucky enuff to find a few while hunting, their paths likely won't be crossing.

Manual removal may be your only choice, but I'd ID the snails first. How about a photo?

Yeah I have a feeling they are NOT pyramid snails after doing some more research on them, they are definitely white/whitish
Also FWIW I have a BUTTLOAD of sponges growing on my rocks on the undersides and in shaded areas "probably 50-60 different sponges" so I guess ill just keep an eye on my stuff

I will attempt to find one tomorrow during the day and take a pic of it out of the tank on something dark so that you can see it "kinda hard to take a pic of a grain of rice LOL
