So, friend of mine is going to sell me his ballasts and endcaps for his VHO lighting he no longer uses. He said it will do 48'' x 4 @ 110w. I'm wondering what the best bulb type combination would be...

This is what i was thinking...
    UVL 48 Inch T12 VHO Super Actinic Bulb (110 Watts) x 2

    UVL 48 Inch T12 VHO Actinic White Bulb (110 Watts) x 1

UVL 48 Inch T12 VHO AquaSun Bulb (110 Watts) x1

I noticed that the online shop had some 46.5 " bulbs, is there any advantage to using a bulb slightly shorter than the tank or just stick to the full length?

Also, any do's / dont's when building a canopy to house these things in?

The 48" bulbs are actually 46.5". Some companies list them as the actual size of the bulb while other include the endcaps.

What bulbs do you have now?

    unfortunately not much...

Currently have just the standard, comes with the tank lighting fixture with an Ocean Sun 10,000k bulb in it. Not sure off the top of my head what the wattage on that bulb was... but it's def not a VHO. Can you even use a bulb like that in a setup like this?

If it was me, I would do:

1 Super A Deep purple, makes the colors pop
1 AquaSun Good daylight bulb, has a pink tint to it
    2 Actinic White Blue/White very nice 12K

Are you wanting to keep corals or is this a FO system?

I'd love to keep some more corals yea. Currently i've got a bazillion green striped mushrooms that loved a PC for the short while i had it going... They don't seem to mind this one too much but def not quite as happy... I'm sure they'll go nuts under real lighting though. amazing i only started out with like 2 of the things...

My office has 2 150's. Ones a fowlr and the others a reef. kind of hoping i might be able to get some frags off of our reef tank eventually. Things been up like 3 months and is looking incredible. slightly jealous! ok, alot jealous...

I found the Aquasun to be very pink and didn't like it. I used two super actinics and two days and really liked the color.
The 48" bulbs are 48" pin to pin, the 46.5" bulbs are 46.5" pin to pin so along with the endcaps will fit inside a 48" canopy like found on most 55 thru 90 G tanks.
I still to this day use VHO super actinics to supplement my lighting as I find them to have the best color.

Never had VHOs but I read that the UVL Super actinic VHO bulb is the most popular bulb of all aquarium bulbs.
