So I have a 14 gallon reef (same dimensions as a standard 10, but with about 5" more on the top.) I have a pc lighting fixture on the top, 80 watt. I have been keeping zoas, palys, shrooms, xenia, yellow polyps, and two colt corals with ease so far. I know I can care for corals I just don't know how far I can go with my light.

I want to try trumpets/candy canes, monti caps, or even some type of birdsnest. I have a rock formation going 4" from the surface. Do you think I could keep either of these if I put them up top? If you guys could think of any other good coral for my tank along these lines, I would appreciate it.

Thanks guys, looking forward to some responses.

I had birdsnest/monti at the very top back when I had pc's. LPS corals would be a good choice too. Very few require intense light.

Montis and Birdsnest are fairly low light SPS. I say give it a try. A frag on monti normally runs 5-10 bucks. Easy and cheap to try.

    Not sure on the others.

I say go for it too as long as they go at the top and then adjust accordingly. You could always go for something like a torch or frogspawn.

i just needed opinions before i would buy them because here in wisconsin, everything is about 500% more expensive than other places. a nickel size frag of a monti is gonna run me atleast $25

if i could find them for 5 to 10, i would have definately already given it a try. but thanks for the info. :)

try shopping online for frags.. might be able to find a good deal if you buy enough at once.. to offset shipping costs..

Could also look into a group buy, there must be some other 3reefers in your area, and I'm sure a few would like some frags.

    Just a thought

Go for it you have enough juice in the lights to do it. Just remember to place them higher and change the bulbs religiously every six months.

How many bulbs and what color are they?
