For a 10g tank, you can get T5's and that will work great. Or do like baugherb, who has a 70w MH on a 5.5g tank. You shouold also consider if you up-grade in the near future, if that unit can be switch over to the new set-up. Luna

In fact, you can get away with PC's for a 10g tank. How deep is a 10g? Luna

You will want a simple little T5 set up. Don't even think PCs. I am running those on my 90g and would love to get rid of them. They are good for a sump and that's about it. You will have a bit of difficulty finding a 20" fixture, but they are out there. Aim for about 40 to 50 watts total. You would get away with a little less but I wouldn't go less than 35W in any case.

My old 10 gallon was 12 inches from water surface to the gravel. I agree that PCs or T-5 lights should work just fine. 20 inch lights will be hard to find, though. I think that 40-50 watts will be too hot for a little 10 gallon tank, though.
