I never owned a FW setup either. My first tank was in the early 80s, and I got into it mostly for the fish. I had groupers, triggers, eels. I loved that the fish would eat each other if they were big enough!

Back then, my tanks always had copious amounts of algae, as it was a sign of a well-established tank. :)

Now, more than 20 years later, I pride myself on a well-established tank, but WITHOUT the algae. Corals are definitely the next step up, and definitely light years ahead of a FOWLR tank when it comes to having your stuff on point.

Very little room for mess ups with a reef tank.

I look forward to the day when I have it perfected. I envy people like Geekdafied, Guru, and Tangster--who can grow out corals in their sleep.

    If only. . . ..

i never did freshwater either, i think i would get bored with it... nothing to really grow/watch open and close, all you really have to get excited about is some dull fish. i was told when i started this hobby by a good friend, freshwater is for lazy poeple, and their just might be some truth to that... no offense to anyone, just what ive heard ;D

We got into a s/w tank because of the wide variety of colors in the fish, coral, and even live rock. As silly as this sounds another reason is not alot of pepole we know have s/w . Besides who dosent like a little part of the ocean

I had a SW tank in 1994-5. I was terrible. Did not know what I was doing. Ended up killing the tank. Over and over again. But I have always liked SW, so when I got a 10g freshwater set up for my kids, I got the bug back bad and a month later had my 75g. I have done much better this time around.

I have been doing FW for years and it just seemed like the next logical step. I have always wanted one but heard how much harder and more $$$ they were. So kinda like my kid we waited until we thought we were stable enough to afford one. My kid was premature and had to have several surgeries...needless to say I have a million dollar baby. I hope my tank doesn't get anywhere near the amount but you never know!!

Fish colors and variety! The species that attracted me the most was the surgeonfish (tangs). Also my dad had some old books (The Marine Aquarium; Tetra & The Marine Aquarium Reference: Systems and Invertebrates; Martin Moe Jr.) which I would read all the time.

Also I like the saltwater habitat (Sand, Live rock) more than FW (Usually pebbles, Logs, ugly rocks etc.)

To irritate my parents..they always thought that anyhow.

I got bored with my freshwater tanks when I was a teenager and wanted something different in my tanks, more interesting fish.

I have never been a huge fan of corals, more of a fish person myself.

I had a few friends over for dinner one night, got VERY drunk and decided that my flat really needed a coral reef. After I had sobered up, the idea was still there, so I looked into if it was do-able. I reckoned it was and two weeks later I had my first fish tank.

Drunken inspiration probably isn't the best reason to get pets but I haven't regretted it yet.
