I was recently on the beaches of virginia (virginia beach) due to a long road trip with some friends for a dave matthews concert at the verizon wireless amphitheater. I was boogie boarding and stumbled upon this once piece of a reef and was wondering what type of coral it was. I decided to take it home and put it in my tank, and thought of the idea from now on whatever beach i go to i will bring a little piece of something home from it so i will always remember it and put it in my tank, pretty cool.

sorry for the bad quality, took on a blackberry

edit: i also took it home and knew it was a part of a coral because in one of my dads tanks he has a fake coral that looks just like this, but blue :p

I agree with the favia guess as well. Did you make sure to clean it really well before you put it in your tank. You don't want to bring unwanted pararasites or other things from the ocean home as well.

    False. Look up Favia fragum.

I would guess a faviid, mussid or an acan because of the skeletal shape, but I have no idea how to ID anything definitively by skeleton.
