Are the pods food for something in particular? I think mandarins only eat benthic pods (?)

Not yet, just got my first fish in yesterday but will be doing a mixed reef in the future. I figure getting the population established before I fill it with animals depending on them will be the best idea.
thanks for everyones input so far.

The one study people like to quote states a small 2-5% shift (so at worst, in there study, a shift from 50:50 to 45:55), and those were collected in Alaska. The species ranges from Alaska to Central America, not to mention they do not live in the ocean but rather the upper splash zone of which routinely gets in the upper 90's.

Reef Nutrition's were collected much further south and are grown in a green house that maintains a temp above 68 F at all times and the cultures have been going for over 5 years straight. The best yields are in warmer temps.

Cultures tend to fizzle out when there is not enough food. Like any animal, food in the limitation.

Ya prob never really need to feed them, but a pellet or 2 every know and then doesn't seem to hurt. Mine go nuts when i throw a pellet in, plus it makes for easier collection.

I just received a pods order from Reefcleaners when I get the CUC. Full of pods and they're all over the aquarium sides now. Can't beat it for the price.

Phytoplankton (heavy in diatoms and not so much in the greens like Nanno), crushed up flake food and even decaying macro algae.

You also must understand that there are very few predators in their natural environment, and NONE where they are grown. They are easy prey for mysids, whom simply love to hunt em. Good thing to do with them, is feed crushed upo flake food, or rotifers if the budget allows.

For transparency sake (even though I have mentioned this countless times on the forum, best to do it in this thread as well), I work for Reed Mariculture, the producers of Reef Nutrition and APBreed products (along with Instant Algae). I was a MOD here years ago but when I started working longer hours, I lost the time to do my work here.
