I was doing the same exact research you were cause I'm getting started on a sump and was doing all the required research to get started. IMO from reading reviews ans shopping around some I was looking at the Reef Octopus SuperReef XP200 and the other was the Vertex IN-180. I have quite a bit on these two and it seems like all the owners of these fine pieces of equipment were quite happy

wish i could comment on that for ya....i think you might be able to ask ReefSparky or wkbrdr1661 cause i think they both have one....but here is somethin from wkbrdr1661's thread about getting one and how quiet it is

"As far as noise goes... its is at least a 100% improvement over the fission. The loudest thing on my tank is the overflow now. I cant even hear the skimmer with the door open." and the thread is posted below if you wanna read up on it. That thread has me leaning towards getting one for my sump pretty soon!

What is your budget? What do you want besides quiet operation. What is you tank, or what are your future plans?

well I make pretty good money so a nice one would be good. I have a 90 gal and I want a reef. I currently have fish and live sand plus 4 live rocks

Well, if you want to spend money, A Bubble King is as good as it gets. My Mini 160 was awesome on my 90g. Mini 180 even would be good up to a 180g. Very very quiet. I would not think twice about buying used. You can find them on RC from time to time for very reasonable prices. They are $800 new, $450-600 used. The collection cup is the best design out there. Lifts right of and neck comes out for cleaning. All the simmer you would need. Very small foot print with pump underneath.

Next in line would be a ATB 840 v. 1.5 Awesome skimmer. What everyone copies. The modified scicce pump is very quiet, and does not have diectional starting issues. Some complain about the price of cones, but this is a steal for $650.

I love my Warner Marine K2. However, it does have directional start issues. (no big deal to me) It is $720, but it is also rather big. Sized bigger than the 840. My decision was based on wanting to move to a 180, so I wanted a little bigger than the 840. Warner Marine makes excellent cylinder skimmers as well. Look at a AS-200. American made too.

Next I would say a I-tech with a Tunze. Only because the Tunze is a good pump. From what I hear it is quiet. Owners are very happy with theirs. Very good performers. Down the price scale at ~$450.

Now those all have solid construction and quality pumps. Excellent customer service to boot. That does not mean others can't perform as well. Octos are good performers and great prices. The new cone 2000 is a very good product. Great value. Not too sure about how quiet the pump is. MSX makes quality skimmers and have space savers too with pumps underneath. A MSX 200 would do great for you. They have cones as well. Very good stuff.
